Simo Kähkönen b. 15 Feb 1881

Viesti Kirjoittaja Katie » 30.04.2013 07:48

In a family record I found Simo Kähkönen born 15 Feb 1881 and moving to America early 1900's. He was born in Lentua, Kuhmo area. Looks like his father was Thomas Kähkönen b. 28 Mar 1837 (Lendua 15, Kuhmo). Thomas was married, I think, to Magdaleena Komulainen b. 14 Feb 1847 and Married 11 Apr 1870. Thomas's father was Johan Kähkönen b.23 Dec 1797 in the Lentua, Kuhmo area. Can't find who he married.
I am looking for communion record for Simo. There would be just his birth recording as he moved out of the country 1901-1903. If you can find Simo's communion book/records it should show his siblings, Henrik, Johan, Matti, Thomas, Mikko, Elsa, (Simo 1881) Anna Vappu, Erik, Antti.

I can never find the Communion Book entries. At what point does a person start their own records. When they get married and their first child is born?
I hope you can find Simo's birth record. It's not in Hiski and I could not find it in other records.
Thank You
Janice

Hello, Could you please tell me why in the communion entries there are 3 children that do not have check marks in the columns.
They imigrated to America so it wasn't childhool death.
What are the most common meanings of the boxes not being checked off
Thank You
Janice

If Simo's communion entry was found, and we have a copy of his birth certificate why can I not find it in FFHA under Syntyneet or Hiski.
Attached is a copy of his birth certificate. Can you please try to locate the entry?
Thank you so much.

Hi Janice,

In Children's Books the columns on the right side are not for communion (when a person received his/her first Communion, s/he was transfered from the Children's Book to the Communion Book), but for their learning. The first columns are for reading and spelling skills, and the others for the basics of Christian religion (like Ten Commandments). The last children here must have been too young to have marks on those columns.

The church organized the basic education at that time. You could not get married before you had "passed the test", and many other "adult rights" were dependent on the same. The "Priest certificate" you have attached to your message, also tells that Simo has passed "rippikoulu" (scripture school), goes regularly to communion and is "kansalaisluottamusta nauttiva" (enjoying "full citizen rights"). So that is not actually a birth certificate, but a general certificate telling who this person is and it may include different information like here "vaccinated" (rokotettu) etc.

Hello, Eevah
Your reply is wonderful. I learned something new about the children's books and the communion books. It is such an wonderful piece of information to know - the education, citizenship etc.

Can a birth registry be found for Simo in Kuhmo in 1881?

Thank you so much for the new information. It is very much appreciated.
Janice
