Marriage record questions

Viesti Kirjoittaja Lynette1 » 18.10.2023 23:45

I try to get as much information as possible from each record. There are a few things on this record that I can find the answer to.

The young farmer’s son Erik Johansson Skrabb from Alajärvi and the farm servant Greta Eriksdotter were married on December 10, 1792.

Why don’t Erik and Greta have to pay the heavenly ordination (vignings himmel)? Is it because Erik was not from Lappajärvi? That seems to be the only difference between them and the other couples. I am assuming this was the marriage license fee.
The records indicate that the couple was married without debt and that they were married in the home of E G Lagus. Why is there a charge to be married in his home (or garden) - hemvigsel. There seems to be no charge for a couple married in the church. And who is he? I can’t figure out who he is as he is not listed on the clergy list.
Is the money listed as riksdaler, shillings and runstyck?
And lastly, Lazareth’s donation - is that voluntary? I believe it goes for the sick and injured poor. If it’s a mandated payment, how does the church decide how much a couple needs to pay? There is also the poor (fattig) fund but that is not listed here.

This is a lot of questions for one small document.
Thank you for any information that you can provide.
Lynette

vignings himmel was kind of canopy (*) you could rent. The couple was standing under it during the ceremony

Vigningshimmel (morsiantaivas in Finnish) can be seen here, the main picture
https://visitkeskipohjanmaa.fi/fi_FI/ry ... en-perinto
- more you find if you google "morsiantaivas" and it is a tradition of Ostrobothnia

They were wed by Isaac Lagus, chaplain of Lappajärvi at that time.
And I assume they were wed in their own home by (af) Lagus, and the cost of travelling there was the reason of charging.

This is all very interesting!
Thank you for the links and information. The links are very useful. Most of my google searches do not yield anything.
I have some research to do on Finnish wedding customs.

Thank you,
Lynette

The marriage customs of my forefathers in Central Ostrobothnia have been described in great detail here https://www.arviiti.fi/kaustislaisista-haatavoista/
Sorry, only in Finnish you can maybe translate with Google a little.

The customs of Lappajärvi were very near I guess, as the parishes were almost next to each other.

They used to dance purpuri, a series of wedding dances. They are still being danced in an event called kruunuhäät, crown wedding. Here is a good example of purpuri http://villitaskeleet.blogspot.com/2012 ... rpuri.html danced by the school-leaving abiturients.

The most well-known wedding valse, by Konsta Jylhä of Kaustinen, you can hear here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pgAQ9PIuNs

Thank you Tuulacu! I found all that information very interesting and will incorporate some of it into the document I am writing.
By the way, it took me awhile but I figured out that yes, I am a member of the Keisari family. I guess that makes us distant cousins!
I do not have a Facebook account but my children and siblings do and some have requested to join the group.
