Re: definition of Smed Karling

If I put “smed karling” into Google translate, “blacksmith fellow” is the result. :D
But if I put just “karling”, there is no result. So it was confusing.
Thank you.

definition of Smed Karling

My great-grandfather is listed as a blacksmith fellow (smed karling). Does that mean he was an apprentice working under an experienced blacksmith? I can’t find the meaning of “karling” and no clear explanation of a “blacksmith fellow”. I think he got his training while working for the railroad. Than...

Re: Translation

Thank you for the explanation. Perhaps he was living in some sort of barracks that were provided by the railroad.

Re: Translation

Should there be a record of him leaving the parish to work for the railroad? I was unable to find an entry for him in the in-and-out migration records.
Thank you,
Lynette

Translation

I am having great difficulty translating the notation in the remarks column for Heikki Erkinpoika Anttila (4th line).
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thank you,
Lynette

Re: The Finnish rote

You are correct. I did not word that well. They had been farmhands before they married.
They were married and listed on one of the “itsellisia” pages as immigrating to Minnesota.

Re: The Finnish rote

Birgit and Kimpula, Thank you for your replies. Kimpula - My great-grandparents were listed on one of the “itsellisiä” pages in Lappajärvi right before they immigrated. They were landless and Henry and Maria were working as a laborer/servant (dräng and piga) on a farm. Birgit - Thank you so much for...

Re: The Finnish rote

Wow! Thank you. Now I have even more question. :D That’s something to think about - taking the poor into you home. But in those small villages, everyone knew their neighbors. I am thinking that perhaps the poor would have been housed in some sort of backstuga? Would the poor have been listed in the ...

Re: The Finnish rote

I might have figured it out. The book appears to be the accounts of the poor, the collection and distribution of money collected from the farmers. There’s something written on these two pages about Erik Eriksson Anttila. I think it is about a death? I would appreciate a summary of what it says. Than...

The Finnish rote

I found this record in the archives and was wondering what the responsibilities/duties of the “rote” was in Finland. I have run across this term in the Swedish archives while researching my Swedish heritage. The rote there was responsible for providing a soldier/sailor for the army/navy as well as h...

Re: Photos of 19th century farms

Tuula, Thank you again! Those photos are wonderful! Some of the landscape in the video reminds me of where I grew up in northern Minnesota. There’s even a town named Finland there… lots of Finnish immigrants settled in the area. Many also settled in northern Wisconsin where my great-grandparents set...

Photos of 19th century farms

Is there a website that has photos of 19th century farms/farmhouses in the Alajärvi/Lappajärvi region? I am wondering what the farmhouses, saunas, barns and fields looked like back when my ancestors lived there. Also, photos of the farm workers in the fields. I have translated a few estate inventori...

Re: Marriage record questions

Thank you Tuulacu! I found all that information very interesting and will incorporate some of it into the document I am writing. By the way, it took me awhile but I figured out that yes, I am a member of the Keisari family. I guess that makes us distant cousins! I do not have a Facebook account but ...

Re: Marriage record questions

This is all very interesting!
Thank you for the links and information. The links are very useful. Most of my google searches do not yield anything.
I have some research to do on Finnish wedding customs.

Thank you,
Lynette
