This link will show the death entry for Karolisa who died less than 1 year old. Her name is about 3/4 of the way toward the bottom of the page and the entry above her also was an infant who looked to have died of the same cause. I would like to know if the symbol or abbreviation is the cause of death.
Thank You
Janice

It's a common abbreviation do = ditto (Latin) = same (in this case same as above). So it goes up to entry oang. = oangiven = not given, an alternative way of saying ok. = okänd = unknown.
BTW. The name is Karolina (equals Caroline).

If you mean Johan Maaningas dotter Karolina, then the cause of her death was oang. meaning uncataloged disease.
Here is a website to deathcauses in english: http://www.saunalahti.fi/hirvela/histor ... hsivu.html

I have the link for the English translation and it's very handy. I could not make out the letters. So it's 'ditto'. I thought that at first and wasn't sure. Her name though, here is her communion book entry and if you look above her name you will see her sister Greta Lisa which I took the 'S' to look similar to Karolina's. Wow did I read this entry wrong. That's why we have great translators like you to help us along. It's very much appreciated.
Thanks again for your help.
