Marriage record questions
I try to get as much information as possible from each record. There are a few things on this record that I can find the answer to. The young farmer’s son Erik Johansson Skrabb from Alajärvi and the farm servant Greta Eriksdotter were married on December 10, 1792. Why don’t Erik and Greta have to pa...

Re: Missing birth record
Tuula K,
Thank you for the information about the Facebook group. It took me awhile but I figured out that I am part of that family!
Thanks!

Re: Estate Inventory
Thank you. I looked very carefully through the available archives online. For whatever reason, it is missing.

Estate Inventory
I am trying to locate the estate inventory for Margreta Eriksdotter from the Skrabb Niemitalo No 2 farm in the Alajärvi Parish. She died on April 11, 1829. I have looked through the estate inventories in E1a:3 and E1a:4a but can’t find hers. Is there an index somewhere to the inventories. I am not e...

Re: Translation
Wow! That’s crazy that the Finns differentiated every combination of marital status with this crime.
My ancestor seems to have committed the least serious offense.
It was a very different time back then, that’s for sure.
Thanks for the information.

Re: Translation
Thank you again! I had been trying to find her listed in the Communion Books but could not locate her. I certainly can’t navigate these records like you can!! Would Sara Simonsdotter have had a estate inventory conducted at her death? In her husband’s inventory upon his death, it looks like everythi...

Re: Translation
Thank you so much! I completely missed this child’s birth in my research.
Sara died about six months later. Sad to think about the child’s life afterwards.

Re: Translation
Now that I an thinking more about this… It seems someone must have reported Sara’s indiscretion to the Church or made a formal complaint. Otherwise, how would the Church have found out about this? I would think this would be a common thing to be fined for but it I can’t find it anywhere else in the ...

I found this record of my ancestor Sara Simonsdotter Sihtala being fined 1 32.
Can anyone translate what the fine was for?
Thank you,

Re: Eldest son inheriting the farm
Thank you for clarifying this. The concept of the Finnish farm is a bit confusing to me. For example the name of the farm changes from one generation to the next, from Sihtala No 6 to Anttila No 6. I am trying to figure out where those names come from and why they change. My great-grandfather who im...

Re: Eldest son inheriting the farm
Thank you for your reply. Especially thank you for the link to the estate inventory. What a wonderful document to have! I have tried to navigate through the archives, but never found the estate inventories. I was just stating that in general I have read about the eldest son inheriting the farm. I di...

Eldest son inheriting the farm
I am trying to figure out at what age the eldest son Henrik would have inherited the family farm. Henrik Eriksson’s father (and grandfather) both died in 1814 when he was 16 years old. His mother, Greta Eriksdotter, married Tobias Andersson, a much younger man who was a lowly farmhand. Tobias is lis...

Re: Translating a word
One last thought on this subject.
I noticed that in the death records only for a few deceased was this cloth rented from the church. They seem to be the head of the household or their wives, no children. Perhaps it was some sort of prestige to have this cloth covering your casket.
