Re: The Finnish rote
Wow! Thank you. Now I have even more question. :D That’s something to think about - taking the poor into you home. But in those small villages, everyone knew their neighbors. I am thinking that perhaps the poor would have been housed in some sort of backstuga? Would the poor have been listed in the ...

Re: The Finnish rote
I might have figured it out. The book appears to be the accounts of the poor, the collection and distribution of money collected from the farmers. There’s something written on these two pages about Erik Eriksson Anttila. I think it is about a death? I would appreciate a summary of what it says. Than...

The Finnish rote
I found this record in the archives and was wondering what the responsibilities/duties of the “rote” was in Finland. I have run across this term in the Swedish archives while researching my Swedish heritage. The rote there was responsible for providing a soldier/sailor for the army/navy as well as h...

Re: Photos of 19th century farms
Tuula, Thank you again! Those photos are wonderful! Some of the landscape in the video reminds me of where I grew up in northern Minnesota. There’s even a town named Finland there… lots of Finnish immigrants settled in the area. Many also settled in northern Wisconsin where my great-grandparents set...

Photos of 19th century farms
Is there a website that has photos of 19th century farms/farmhouses in the Alajärvi/Lappajärvi region? I am wondering what the farmhouses, saunas, barns and fields looked like back when my ancestors lived there. Also, photos of the farm workers in the fields. I have translated a few estate inventori...

Re: Marriage record questions
Thank you Tuulacu! I found all that information very interesting and will incorporate some of it into the document I am writing. By the way, it took me awhile but I figured out that yes, I am a member of the Keisari family. I guess that makes us distant cousins! I do not have a Facebook account but ...

Re: Marriage record questions
This is all very interesting!
Thank you for the links and information. The links are very useful. Most of my google searches do not yield anything.
I have some research to do on Finnish wedding customs.
Thank you,
Lynette

Marriage record questions
I try to get as much information as possible from each record. There are a few things on this record that I can find the answer to. The young farmer’s son Erik Johansson Skrabb from Alajärvi and the farm servant Greta Eriksdotter were married on December 10, 1792. Why don’t Erik and Greta have to pa...

Re: Missing birth record
Tuula K,
Thank you for the information about the Facebook group. It took me awhile but I figured out that I am part of that family!
Thanks!

Re: Estate Inventory
Thank you. I looked very carefully through the available archives online. For whatever reason, it is missing.

Estate Inventory
I am trying to locate the estate inventory for Margreta Eriksdotter from the Skrabb Niemitalo No 2 farm in the Alajärvi Parish. She died on April 11, 1829. I have looked through the estate inventories in E1a:3 and E1a:4a but can’t find hers. Is there an index somewhere to the inventories. I am not e...

Re: Translation
Wow! That’s crazy that the Finns differentiated every combination of marital status with this crime.
My ancestor seems to have committed the least serious offense.
It was a very different time back then, that’s for sure.
Thanks for the information.

Thank you again! I had been trying to find her listed in the Communion Books but could not locate her. I certainly can’t navigate these records like you can!! Would Sara Simonsdotter have had a estate inventory conducted at her death? In her husband’s inventory upon his death, it looks like everythi...

Re: Translation
Thank you so much! I completely missed this child’s birth in my research.
Sara died about six months later. Sad to think about the child’s life afterwards.

Re: Translation
Now that I an thinking more about this… It seems someone must have reported Sara’s indiscretion to the Church or made a formal complaint. Otherwise, how would the Church have found out about this? I would think this would be a common thing to be fined for but it I can’t find it anywhere else in the ...
